We Don’t Watch The Nickelodeon ‘Kid’s Choice Awards’ Because My Kids Have No Clue Who These People Are

Nickelodeon Kids Choice AwardsLast night was the 27th Annual Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards and my family didn’t watch it. Because my kids had no interest in watching it. I don’t know if my kids are too old, my youngest is nine, or if we are all just grossly out-of-touch with what is considered popular these days, but when I asked my kids if they wanted to watch the show and I told them Mark Wahlberg was hosting, they had no idea who that was. Except my teenager who made a joke about The Funky Bunch.

I love the idea of Nickelodeon, a network for kids. But I haven’t watched a lot of its programming since my own kids outgrew the Nick Jr stage. I don’t know who the big winners of the night are, and my kids don’t either. They have a vague idea of who Selena Gomez is, but not as a singer, and even though she won the award for favorite female singer even my youngest couldn’t name a song by her. Justin Timberlake, who won for favorite male singer? Only really known to my teenager who knows him for his SNL performances, and not the type of performer who he is dying to watch on an awards show.  My kids like Pharrell, but mainly know him for his work with Daft Punk, so that was out too, even though he appeared on the show. It’s not like they can name any of his other songs besides the Despicable Me 2 song Happy.

Frozen won for best animated movie, and that’s great, and I think most kids are pretty familiar with Frozen by now, but is it enough to get them to tune into an awards show? I think the main draw is watching all of these famous people get “slimed” but if your kids don’t know who these famous people are anyway, it’s just a bunch of grownups wearing expensive jeans getting gallons of goo poured on them. Jennifer Lawrence won the award from “Favorite Female Buttkicker” but didn’t appear to accept it. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire won for best film. I can see my youngest getting excited over that, but with J-Law not even showing up what’s the point?

I guess people watch this show with their kids and enjoy it, but I have a hard time believing that a lot of youngsters know who Kevin Hart is, who won for favorite funny star. I think my kids watch a lot of TV and movies, but maybe just not the ones that these people are starring in. Adam Sandler won for favorite movie actor and I can’t remember the last Adam Sandler movie we watched as a family and enjoyed. I’m pretty sure the last one I watched I tuned into and then couldn’t find my remote control to change the channel.

The biggest shocker for me was that Just Dance 2014 won for favorite video game. I think all of the Just Dance games are fun to play as a family or at a party, but I have a hard time believing that kids would pick that over Minecraft, which I think is popular with all kids regardless of age or gender.

So yay for the Kid’s Choice Awards in recognizing the sorts of entertainment that kids enjoy. Even though I’m not really sure who the kids are that enjoy all the winners.
