Holly Madison Defends Her Baby Name ‘Rainbow’ & The Whole Unique Name Trend In General
As we all know by now, Holly Madison just gave birth to a perfectly little adorable girl and named her Rainbow Aurora. The choice gained some serious snark from the interwebs, as yoonique names tend to do. Our own Editor In Chief Koa Beck is already trying to work out some nicknames for the infant. I’d like to throw a simple “Ray” into the ring as a contender for that, by the way. But Madison isn’t taking the critique of her baby name quietly.
Madison took to her blog to defend the name and even offer some support for the whole unique and unusual name trend in general. She reiterated the story People already shared about knowing a girl in school with the name Rainbow and always loving it, adding, “She was a perfectly normal, well-adjusted, sporty girl, by the way, so I’m not worried about my daughter being ”traumatized” by having an unusual name.”
Heads up Holly, naming your child after someone does not mean that she will turn into that person. So you can’t really know that she’ll deal with an unusual name in the same way. But Madison goes on to explain why she has no problem with unique names. Basically, a little teasing might build character.
There are a lot of smug haters out there who bag on my choice of a name, but I don’t care about what they think. I want my daughter to be proud of who she is and learn to speak up and stand up for herself at a young age. I spent most of my life being a people-pleaser who worried about what other people thought or thought was cool and I don’t want that for her.
Honestly, I think Holly’s goal is admirable. I don’t know that she needed to instill a “me-against-the-world” spirit in her daughter right from the baby name. I think there’s time to teach your child to be confident and secure in her own skin over the next decade.
That being said, I really just appreciate that Holly is standing up for her choice. Baby names are such a personal decision and celebrities have to deal with a whole lot of people getting sarcastic about a very emotional thing. Tons of moms struggle to find the perfect baby name. And we would be furious if some extended relative or partner’s friend made a joke about our choice. It has to be hard for celeb moms.
Holly Madison’s baby name isn’t the most ridiculous thing ever. It wouldn’t be my first choice. But I say good for Holly for defending her choice and for having faith that her daughter will handle a name that some might have some snark for.
