This Shelter Dog was Overjoyed to See Her Family Again, But They Came for a Different Dog

A lovely, sweet German shepherd shelter dog named Zuzu had been moping around the animal shelter looking depressed and sad because she wanted to go home to her family. Then one day she suddenly sprang to her feet and bounded around like one of those military dogs overjoyed to see their people come back from deployment. Her family was back! They were there at the shelter and had come to find her and take her home! She bounced around by the fence and licked their hands. She must have been ecstatic. But then the family kept walking, because they were not coming to pick up Zuzu, they were there to get a different dog. Now everybody on the Internet hates them.

According to The New York Post, shelter dog Zuzu had been picked up as a stray by Animal Control after she escaped from her backyard. Then Animal Control brought her to the shelter. Not long after that, Zuzu’s family showed up, and the shelter employees caught it on tape because they’d been in the yard making introduction videos for the dogs when the family walked by and Zuzu started flying around like she’d just been rescued.

”With her fast wagging tail seeing her owners Zuzu lite up like a Christmas Tree. She looked like the happiest dog. Yeah, she’s going home. But No. Talking to her owners they told me they were not here to reclaim her, they were getting another dog,” wrote a shelter employee on her Facebook video of the incident.

The family said they were going to let her stay at the shelter and not pick her up, because she was “too sad,” of all things. The family’s other German shepherd–Zuzu’s father–had just died, and she was acting sad and lonely. Because she “wasn’t a happy dog anymore,” their solution was to leave her at the shelter and get a new, happier dog.

Zuzu is great with kids and other dogs, and she’s now going to a new rescue that will help her find a permanent home with some people who aren’t monsters. Given the number of people queuing up to adopt her on her ShelterMe page, it looks like she will have a lot of nice people to choose from.
