Earlier today, the Palace refused to deny rumors that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were looking to move to Canada, Meghan’s home country, and now, the royal duo is making a statement of their own. Harry and Meghan have announced they’re stepping back as “senior” members of the royal family and plan to split their time more evenly between the United Kingdom and North America.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the famous couple wrote in a statement posted to the SussexRoyal Instagram page. “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”

The continued, mentioning how baby Archie Harrison will benefit from this decision. “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”

They encouraged patrons with questions to visit the official Sussex Royal website, which had its servers promptly crash from the overload in traffic. Though the website is still online, people can’t seem to get any more information than what’s been posted by the couple to social media.

While many UK citizens posted their well-wishes for Prince Harry and Meghan, others are disappointed or even angered that they seem to be abandoning their royal roles in the U.K. Piers Morgan made a statement blaming Meghan for the decision and accused the former Suits actress of splitting up Prince William and his little brother.

Some are probably wondering “what does this mean”? And while we’re not based in the U.K., so the intricacies of the royal family and Her Majesty The Queen’s role in all of this may be a little bit lost, but it seems like essentially the duo has decided not to participate in the family “business” of royalty, though they will continue, of course, to be part of the family by blood.

We’ll wait to see if any other royal family members comment on this update. We know the tabloids will be having a field day…
