20 Rare and Breathtaking Images of Babies Born in the Amniotic Sac

Birth photographers catch some really amazing moments during labor and delivery. But some of the most amazing birth photos we’ve ever seen are of babies born en caul. En caul means the baby was born inside an intact amniotic sac. They’re really rare, only about 1 in 80,000 births are en caul. Which makes catching one on camera even more special.

1. Photos of babies born en caul are so stunning.

In a caul birth, the membranes will sometimes balloon out before the baby comes out completely.

6. As if giving birth on the way to the hospital wasn’t memorable enough!

Can you imagine having your baby in the car, and looking down to see it en caul?

Some doctors believe that en caul c-sections may be beneficial to extremely premature infants, saving them from enduring uterine contractions.

8. It’s seriously incredible.

We wonder if doctors who deliver babies inside the amniotic sac hope the luck rubs off on them, too?

9. They seriously look so peaceful.

Just a brand new little babe, waiting to finish their grand entrance.

10. Some babies are born “with the caul”.

This differs from being born en caul, in that the sac isn’t intact. Instead, the babies head or face is covered by part of the membrane.

11. Being born with the caul is still really rare.

We’re sure it can look frightening to the mom, but it’s harmless. Sometimes a small incision will be made around the nostrils so the baby can breathe before the caul can be safely removed.

12. Literally a bundle of baby.
