Dog Finds Newborn Preemie In Dump And Promptly Brings Her To His Owner

dumpinggroundIn another instance of sorely needed Safe Haven laws, a newborn baby girl was uncovered — alive — in a plastic bag in a dumping ground in Thailand. But this abandoned infant wasn’t found by a human. She was found by a dog!

Bangkok Post reports that Pui, a male Thai Bangkaew dog, found the white plastic bag containing the prematurely born baby and carried the bag to his owner’s house. Gumnerd Thongmak reportedly heard Pui barking “loudly,” at which point his 12-year-old niece found the newborn within the bag.

The family then took the infant, weighing about four pounds, to Tha Rua Hospital where she was transfered to Phranakhon Sri Ayutthaya Hospital. The abandoned infant is said to have been delivered at seven and a half months.

Authorities are on the lookout for the mother, but in the meantime, Pui has been rewarded for his heroic canine efforts with a medal from Tha Rua district Red Cross Chapter and a leather collar. Pui’s owner was also handed 10,000 baht as a reward for his baby saving.

Any chance that money can go towards some Safe Haven drop off locations? Could probably do a lot more good than, I don’t know, a fancy dog house.
