Filmed with a hidden camera, this perfectly normal woman filmed herself walking — just silently walking — through the streets wearing jeans and a t-shirt. As someone who grew up in Brooklyn, I can assure you that this is, in fact, an average day for a woman who lives there.

Of course, it’s not just New York City. Women everywhere have to deal with this crap on a daily basis. It is nerve-wracking, uncomfortable, aggravating, infuriating, and at times, terrifying. A woman shouldn’t have to fear passing a group of men in the middle of the day on a busy street. The fact that many men feel entitled to make comments to this woman is disgusting. The fact that most of them expect a favorable response is mind-boggling. There is this belief among many men that they should be thanked, and that women should be flattered for being paid a compliment. Well, the problem is that we aren’t out there looking for compliments and we don’t need them from a stranger on the street to make us feel good about ourselves. No one has the right t make pronouncements about our appearance just because we stepped outside that day. We’re just trying to get to work, for christ’s sake.
