An Entire Town Learns Sign Language To Surprise Their Deaf Neighbor

If bursting into tears right now would we be slightly inappropriate for you, maybe you shouldn’t read on or watch this video. You’ve been warned.

An entire neighborhood spent a month learning sign language so they could surprise their deaf neighbor with the daily interaction and greetings most of us take for granted. The surprise was organized by Samsung Turkey as part of an ad campaign for a new video calling center that enables the hearing impaired to communicate easily. Not only did the neighborhood partake in sign language classes, there were also cameras placed strategically around town to accomplish the recording.

Muharrem, a hearing impaired man, and his sister are shown walking around town. Everyone they bump into communicates with Muharrem via sign language. The look on his face as he tries to figure out what is going on is… well, take a look for yourself.

There are a lot of things we take for granted. The ability to have people speak to you in your language is just one. I showed it to my four-year-old and explained to him what was going on. He said, “people should talk to him more.” Yes, it’s an ad, but it’s also proves how a few small interactions can impact someone’s world. My son decided he wants to learn how to talk to people who can’t hear. I said, “that’s a great idea.”
