Twitter Has Reacted to the New Health Care Bill With ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Memes

On Thursday, the US House of Representatives narrowly passed a bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and replace it with the American Health Care Act (AHCA). The new bill removes some of the most popular parts of the ACA, while making women especially vulnerable to skyrocketing premiums or denial of coverage.

As the list of what would be considered a preexisting condition started to make the rounds ”” things like rape, c-sections, domestic violence, and postpartum depression  ”” several people on Twitter started to notice a frightening parallel between real-life and Margaret Atwood’s frighteningly prophetic 1985 novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. With the Hulu adaptation of Atwood’s book just released, the memes were in full-effect…and way too accurate.
