A Round Of Applause For Tori Spelling Shaming Star For False Divorce Claims

tori spellingNothing has made me want to yell “You go girl!” more in the past decade than reading Tori Spelling‘s serious take down of Star magazine’s falsely reporting that she and husband Dean McDermott were heading for divorce. The ridiculous cover story of the weekly tabloid is one we’re all familiar with. It relies on unnamed sources and anonymous tips. It uses words like “possibly” and “could,” and end every sentence in a question mark. Typical tabloid fare. The problem is that this nonsense was read by none other than Spelling’s oldest son Liam in the grocery check-out line.

Yes, Spelling’s almost-6-year-old caught a glimpse of the trashy magazine and their feigned concern asking, “Who will get the kids?” right above a recent family picture. According to Tori, her little boy was confused and upset.

“He became terrified. I had to hurry him and his confused 4-year-old sister Stella out of the grocery store and into our car. By the time he was fastening himself into his car seat he was asking, ”Why is someone getting us?? Where are you and Dad going?” He was anxiously biting his lower lip and his big blue eyes were filled with tears. My heart sank. How would I explain to my children that what these 3 writers who have never even met us but who claim to know the ins and outs of our relationship and have proudly put their names on this article are flat out writing lies?”

Spelling can’t be the first celebrity mom whose children have caught wind of tabloid rumors. The Jolie-Pitts famously don’t let their kids Google them for this very reason, they don’t want their little ones seeing all the filth and crap printed about their parents. Plenty of other well-known parents are the subject of constant tabloid speculation and flat-out lies. This might just be a disturbing lesson that some children have to learn: “Magazines will lie and then people will read those lies for entertainment.”

Still, whether it’s a common Hollywood problem or not, Tori Spelling has every right to shame Star for their nonsense. Yes, Tori puts herself and her family in the public eye. I’ve seen enough staged family outings captured by paparazzi lenses to know that Spelling has a working relationship with the tabloids. But that does not mean that she deserves to be lied about. That doesn’t mean that her kids should have to see bogus divorce claims about their parents and go to bed worried and upset.

And if you don’t believe the claims are bogus? Well, Star made them last May as well.
