This Pregnant Woman Eats Roadkill

Forget pickles and ice cream. Mom-to-be Alison Brierley craves roadkill. That’s right, the British artist and taxidermist has been eating various animals she’s found dead on the side of the road, including hare, deer, pigeon, rabbit, owls and pheasant.

“Usually I eat really healthily but now that I’m pregnant I get strong cravings for roadkill,” Brierley, 42, told Metro UK. “It’s more gamey than other meat and I love the taste. I also don’t have to feel guilty about eating it because I know it’s had a completely free range and natural life.”

Brierley’s first “find” was a pheasant. “I stopped and I thought, ‘I’m going to eat this,'” she told Mail Online. “I took it home and marinated it in olive oil for four days before I made a kind of Kentucky fried pheasant dish.

I’m trying not to judge I really am but this whole thing is making me gag. I mean, really, it’s gross! I know, I know, I’m sounding all sheltered and narrow-minded. But can you blame me? I know that when I swerve my car so as not to run over an already dead raccoon or squirrel, the last thing on my mind is scooping it up and bringing it home for dinner. But, hey, that’s just me.

Fortunately for Brierley, her buddies are far more accepting. In fact, she said she’s even hosted roadkill dinner parties for her friends. “They trust me and they know I’m a good cook so I think they love it. I get the best meat from friends who ring me up to tell me about a kill they’ve spotted on their way to work,” she explains.

Brierley takes the term ‘pregnancy craving’ to a whole new level. In September, we reported that a newly pregnant Beyonce craved ketchup-chipped bananas. Now that I can relate to. Ditto Jessica Simpson, who has reportedly been craving cheese-flavored popcorn and nacho chips dipped in chocolate. But owl? And pigeon? Blech!
