We hear about car accidents caused by falling asleep at the wheel, kids being injured or worse when their sleep-deprived parents doze off, but did you know that sleep deprivation has been linked to some of the worst disasters in human history? The engineers working the night the Chernobyl power plant exploded had been working for 13 hours or more without a break or rest. Managers involved in the tragic launch and explosion of the Challenger shuttle had only slept for two hours before arriving to work at 1 a.m. The third mate of the Exxon Valdez fell asleep at the helm and was unable to steer the boat back in time to prevent crashing and causing the destructive oil spill.
