All The Names Meghan And Harry Are Considering For Their Royal Baby

Spring is finally here, which means that those of us who love the royals are officially on royal baby watch 2019. That’s right, it’s almost time for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to have their first child. So, what do we know about Baby Sussex? Not much. There are few details known about the arrival of Baby Sussex, but one of the things we’re most curious about is the royal baby name.

It seems that Harry and Meghan are going for the element of surprise for their first baby. According to The Cut, when asked about the baby’s gender, Meghan said she didn’t know. There are so few surprises left in life, especially when you’re royal, and they’re first time parents, so this makes a lot of sense. Because they don’t know the baby’s gender, they are reportedly decorating the nursery in Frogmore Cottage with a gender neutral theme. Since they don’t know the baby’s gender, what they’re going to name Baby Sussex is anyone’s guess. Some are saying that names like Victoria are front runners. But as rules dictate, the Queen will get final approval before the public knows. We have a few ideas and suggestions if they’re interested in our opinions on the royal baby name.

Diana

This is likely one of the most obvious choices for a royal baby name if it’s a girl. Princess Diana, Prince Harry’s mother was so deeply loved. Not only by her son, but by the world. We all know that Prince Harry was incredibly close to his mom, and makes it abundantly clear that he wishes his mom could share in his joy. What better way to honor her incredible legacy, and his love for his mom, than to name their child after her? It would be the first direct naming after Princess Diana ”” one of Princess Charlotte’s many middle names is Diana.

Spencer

If the couple is looking for a royal baby name for a boy (or even a gender neutral name) that still keeps with Princess Diana’s legacy, Spencer is a perfect choice. Princess Diana’s family name is Spencer, and Prince Harry still maintains a relationship with his mother’s family. Princess Diana’s older sister, Lady Jane Fellowes, did a reading during the royal wedding as a way to represent the Spencer family and honor Princess Diana. And aside from the relation to Prince Harry’s family, Spencer has another meaning to the couple. Actress Abigail Spencer is one of Meghan Markle’s close friends and acted as one of her honorary bridesmaids.

Victoria

Queen Victoria is arguably the second most well-known Queen in the history of Britain. She has the second longest reign of any British monarch(Queen Elizabeth surpassed her a few years ago.) Pop culture is very interested in her and especially the love story between her and her husband Prince Albert. The movie The Young Victoria is a great take on their epic love story. Because of Victoria’s popularity as queen, it’s no surprise that the name is quite common, especially in the UK. But it’s still popular for a good reason ”” there is something very traditional and yet, stylish about the name Victoria.

Alice

Alice may seem like an odd choice for a royal baby name, but there is actually family legacy there. Queen Victoria’s second oldest daughter (and first of her children to die) is Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse. She was actually quite a strong woman who was a champion of women’s issues was back in the mid 1800s. She took a great interest in nursing and gynecological health. In addition to being the daughter of Queen Victoria, she is the great-grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who is Prince Harry’s grandfather. Prince Philip’s mother (Prince Harry’s great-grandmother) is named Alice, after her grandmother.

Philip

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is Prince Harry’s grandfather. The Duke of Edinburgh and his grandson have a close relationship. After the death of Princess Diana, Prince Philip made sure Prince Harry and Prince William, who were tweens at the time, had the space to grieve for their mother privately. During the funeral procession for Princess Diana, Prince Philip walked with Princes William and Harry as a show of support for them during what is arguably the hardest days in their lives so far. Even though he is very much alive, Prince Harry might want to honor his grandfather in this special way.

Henry

Image: Instagram/@harrysmeghan

Anyone who knows anything about Prince Harry is that his given name isn’t ”Harry,” it’s ”˜Henry. Many people found out during the wedding ceremony, but those of us who are Prince Harry stans from way back already knew. Since having a ”junior” isn’t something that is particularly common among the royal family, this could be the way Prince Harry gets to have a son who is a junior. Henry is actually not super out there ”” even though it’s an older name, you don’t see too many boys with the name Henry out on the playground. And it’s not particularly common in the family either, so it might be nice to have another Henry around.

Grace

The name Grace has no real relation to the royal family or their legacy. But, it would be a great choice for a royal baby name because it pays homage to another actress turned royal. Princess Grace of Monaco, also known as actress Grace Kelly, was an Oscar winning actress from the classic Hollywood era back in the 1940s and 50s. But, she gave up her acting career to marry Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Since Meghan Markle also gave up her acting career to marry into a royal family, it might be a nod to her most famous predecessor.

Arthur

Within the royal family, Arthur is often a middle name. Both Prince William and Prince Louis have Arthur as one of their middle names. Since it is a name that is already in the family, they may decide to bring it to the forefront instead of burying it behind other names. One of Queen Victoria’s many children (she had nine!) is Prince Arthur. He was the General Governor of Canada during his life. And we know Meghan Markle lived there while filming Suits. So, if they choose Arthur as a royal baby name, it would kind of a be a full circle kind of moment.

James

James feels like a perfect kind of royal baby name. Though it is not particularly common as a royal family name in England, it feels like it should be. As of right now, the only James in the family is James, Viscount Severn. He is the son of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Young James (he’s only 11) is Prince Harry’s younger cousin and youngest grandchild of the Queen. As of right now, James is 11th in line for the throne, but that will change once baby Sussex is born. It might be cool for the cousins to share a name!

Alexandra

One of the Queen’s middle names is Alexandra. This could very well be a nod to the Queen’s ancestors. Queen Victoria’s first name is actually Alexandrina, after her godfather, Emperor Alexander I of Russia. Slight tweaks to the name bring you to Alexandra, which is a solid royal baby name. Because the Queen is still alive, maybe naming their child after her would be in poor taste. None of the Queen’s grandchildren, or great-grandchildren as it is, have the name Elizabeth. But Prince Harry is close with his grandmother, and Meghan has taken over some of the Queen’s duties as patron, so this is a great way to honor her.

Mary

Mary is another name that feels like it should be more common as a royal baby name than it is. But, it does have ties and a legacy within the royal family. It is the Queen’s other middle name (her full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary.) And before the Queen, her paternal grandmother is Mary of Teck. Mary as a name sounds a little old fashioned, but if we know anything about the way most royals are named, it fits right in. Many of these names just get recycled throughout the family over years and years, so maybe it’s time for Mary to make a comeback.

Harriet

There is no record of Harriet in the royal family as far as we can find. But, it could still be a contender. Especially if they want to keep with the trend of classic names that don’t go out of style. Harriet is a very sweet name and means ”home ruler,” which baby Sussex certainly will be. And since Harriet is the female version of Harry/Henry, wouldn’t it be a lovely way to have a name that matches Prince Harry? As of right now, this likely seems like a long shot name, but we’re hoping they consider it. Because it would be super cute.

Cecelia

Cecelia is another name that doesn’t have any sort of familial significance. But it is a beautiful and very timeless name. We know Meghan Markle is a fan of chic and timeless style, and this name fits right in. Cecelia (which you could also spell Cecilia) is Latin for ”blind to one’s own beauty.” Given how stunning their parents are, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Baby Sussex will be absolutely gorgeous. Especially if they get Prince Harry’s red hair, right? So, even though it may not be a name at the top of their list, Cecelia is worth throwing into the mix!

Albert

Albert is another royal baby name with a family legacy. There have been plenty of Albert’s in the family line in the last 200 years. Queen Elizabeth’s father, George VI is actually named Albert. Though his royal name is George VI, he was named Albert because he was born on the anniversary of his grandfather, Prince Albert’s death. Queen Victoria was displeased, and this was a way to gain her favor. Since he was not expected to ever become king, Albert, was called ”Bertie,” which is actually kind of cute. So, this name is solid, and almost so old it’s cool?

Edward

Edward is a very common royal baby name, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good one. Obviously, it is still solid, or else there wouldn’t be as many. One of the most famous Edwards in royal family history is Edward VIII. He famously abdicated the throne in December of 1936 because he wanted to marry Wallis Simpson. Simpson was an American as well, and was famously divorced. They’re actually buried on the grounds of Frogmore House, where the Sussex family will live. Edward is beyond popular within the royal family. Even the Queen named one of her sons Edward.

Rowan

There is no significance to the name Rowan, but something about it just sounds like a perfect royal baby name. Now that Harry is sixth in line for the throne, with very little chance of actually becoming king one day, there is a little wiggle room in terms of names. If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are looking for something a little off the beaten path, a name like Rowan might be acceptable. And what’s even better is that they can use Rowan as a gender neutral name if they wanted to.There was a rumor that they were talking about making that choice.
