Pregnant Rape Victim Decapitates Attacker To ‘Protect Her Honor’ For Her Children
A pregnant rape victim in Turkey murdered the man who attacked her in a rather public and dramatic fashion. The woman was reportedly abused by the man for months, resulting in her pregnancy, which is five months along. Finally, after the rapist attempted to blackmail his victim by saying that he would send nude pictures of her to her parents, the woman snapped. She shot, stabbed and decapitated her attacker. Then she threw his severed head into the middle of a town square, proclaiming, “That is the head of one who toyed with my honor.”
The proud declaration of her retaliation has already earned her comparison’s to a Tarantino movie. In fact, Gawker guesses, “And somewhere, glued to his computer screen, Quentin Tarantino feverishly takes notes.”
Call me lame, but I feel like it’s a little inappropriate to joke about. This 26-year-old woman is already the mother of two children. She is seeking an abortion for her current pregnancy, which will be unlikely because termination is illegal in Turkey after the first 10 weeks of gestation. She was obviously at the end of her mental and emotional rope.
This woman didn’t just turn in her attacker. She murdered him brutally. What’s more, she felt like she had to commit this act to restore her honor, for both herself and her family. The woman told police during her testimony,
“He kept saying that he would tell everyone about the rape. My daughter will start school this year. Everyone would have insulted my children. Now no one can. I saved my honour. They will now call children the kids of the women who saved her honor.”
She may have saved her honor, but she will also most likely spend time in jail. She will spend time away from those children she was trying to defend. And her actions have brought more attention to those little kids than her rape ever could. But this woman felt like she had to risk the possibility of leaving her children, because the dishonor put on a rape victim was too much to bear.
This may sound like a movie plot, but it also gives a window into the way rape victims are treated in other cultures, and sometimes our own. The victim is seen as part of the problem. She’s thought to be unclean, impure or dishonorable, even though her body was taken by force. Even though she gave no consent. There’s still a fault and a blame placed on the victim.
The threat of that blame was enough to cause a woman and mother to do a horrendous thing. To actually decapitate another human being, and then proudly display her crime for all to see.
According to The Daily Mail, women’s groups in Turkey have praised this woman has a heroine. We’re already joking about her leading role in an action movie. But really, this story is a tragedy for everyone involved.
