We can’t help it. When we think of ‘Emma’ we still think of Ross and Rachel’s little girl from Friends. Today, Emma would be in high school, and Jennifer Ansiton recently said she has no doubt that Ross and Rachel would still be together raising her. It could be that the Friends usage of the name has contributed to it’s popularity. People who grew up with the show could now be naming their daughters. As for Liam, it’s an Irish original short form for William. A user on Behind the name left this comment about the shorter name, “I think it would be kinder to name your child William, then if they outgrow the nickname “Liam” they have a ton of options for other diminutives to use.”
