Parents DIY Their Own Pedophile-Busting Group, Successfully Bust 6 Pedophiles By Posing As Kids

letzgohuntingThere’s something pretty innately bad ass about imagining mothers and fathers ensnaring child rapists online. During my Mommyish tenure, so many parents I speak to feel utterly helpless in the face of such threats to their families, which is what makes the circumstances of Letzgo Hunting, a reportedly new “vigilante” online group so captivating.

Metro news reports that a group of six mothers and fathers, known as Letzgo Hunting, duped seven pedophiles by posing as children online. Said parents started up conversations with these sketch monsters on social media and then arranged to meet them in public (they also share video of these encounters). Using these details, Letzgo Hunting has tipped police off to six subsequent arrests:

As a result of the group’s activities, Leicestershire police arrested a 54-year-old man in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, a 24-year-old man in Loughborough, and a 33-year-old man in Hinckley.

Warwickshire police arrested a 26-year-old man in Nuneaton, a 54-year-old man in Leamington and a 51-year-old man in the north Warwickshire area. All six are out on bail pending further inquiries.

But before you and your knitting circle start donning Anonymous style masks, consider that UK police maintain that this “DIY approach” to justice often does more harm than good:

“While we understand the strong feelings that motivate this kind of activity, it can seriously affect the chances of success in court, preventing victims from getting justice and increasing the chances of offenders walking free,” a Leicestershire police spokesman said.

“Scumm Buster,” the anonymous leader of Letzgo Hunting, doesn’t seem to have any regrets. He told the outlet:

“Ninety per cent of people think what we are doing is great and are really supportive.

“The others just don’t seem to understand what we are doing they probably don’t have kids.”

Well, you got me there.
