Slain NYPD Officer Becomes Father Two-and-a-Half Years After His Death

In 2014, Pei Xia ”Sanny” Liu became a widow when her husband, NYPD Detective Wenjian Liu was shot and killed. Now, two-and-a-half years later, the NYPD officer has become a father. Sanny gave birth to the couple’s first child, a daughter, earlier this week.

On December 20, 2014, Liu and his partner, NYPD officer Rafael Ramos, were shot execution-style while they sat in a police car. Wenjian and Sanny were two months into their marriage and planned on having children when his life was cut short. The night he died, Sanny requested that her husband’s sperm be preserved.

Sanny told the NYPD that the night after her husband died, she had a dream where he handed her a baby girl.

That dream lead her to go through IVF almost two years after Liu was killed. ”I got pregnant through the [in-vitro fertilization] procedure,” Sanny said, ”and I told my friend, ”˜It’s going to be a baby girl.’ My friend said, ”˜No, you haven’t even checked the sonograms,’ but I was right!”

The NYPD announced the birth of little Angelina Liu on their Facebook page.

Detective Liu’s parents, Wei Tang Liu and Xiu Yan Li, were also present for the birth of their granddaughter.

The NYPD gave Sanny a hat for her daughter with the NYPD shield on it. Sanny told the department that she can’t wait to tell Angelina that her father was a hero. She’s also anxiously looking forward to introducing her daughter to her “big blue family.”

This all must be very bittersweet for the Liu family. We send them our best wishes!
