Struggling Mom’s Lottery Win Will Make You Believe In Fairy Godmothers

woman-lottery-moneyThe Powerball Jackpot made headlines this week when it surpassed $560 million, and now it’s making news again because of one very deserving winner. WTVR reports one of three winning tickets was sold to Marie Holmes, a hardworking North Carolina mother of four. One of Holmes’ children has cerebral palsy, and the young mom has been struggling to make ends meet while also being there for her kids. She worked at both McDonald’s and Walmart, but was forced to quit earlier this year to take care of her children.

Those problems are no more because Holmes and her family are now millionaires. Her winning ticket ensures her a $188 million slice of the lottery pie, a jackpot she says she will use to give her children a secure and extraordinary life.

“Everything is for them. All the struggles that I went through it was all for them,” Holmes told “I just want them to understand that money doesn’t change you. It can help you. They don’t have to worry about that. They can go to college, on me. And they don’t have to worry about nothing. I’m glad I can do that for them.”

Holmes said she was not a frequent lottery player, as she rarely had the extra money, so she considers the win a gift from God. In addition to buying a home and setting up college funds for her children, she plans to make a large donation to her church.

“First I’m going to pay my tithes because I wouldn’t have any of it if it wasn’t for God,” she said. “I’m ready to embrace the change. I’m very grateful for what’s about to happen for my family.”

I, for one, could not be happier for this woman and her family. I can’t imagine how hard this mom has been working or how stressed out she’s been, and I’m beyond thrilled to see lottery money going towards a better life for her and her babies. She seems like she has all the right priorities and will use the money in a really productive way.

Two other tickets matched all six numbers in Wednesday night’s drawing, and there were a smattering of partial matches across the country. I hope the big winners have the right people in their corner and are able to get some guidance to avoid the pitfalls we see so commonly among lottery winners. That kind of jackpot is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity.
