Mexican Clinic Turns Away Woman For Not Being Dilated Enough, She Gives Birth On Flipping Lawn Outside
Among the fairly standard labor horror stories of epidurals not working and not quite making it to the hospital is the doctor being all “you’re not ready yet.” Twenty-nine-year-old Irma Lopez now has one of the worst stories of this ilk in that after she was turned away, she gave birth on the lawn. Outside the Rural Health Centre that she had JUST been turned away from.
Metro reports that terrifying images of Irma giving birth have been circulating internationally. An uncensored image reportedly was on the front page of La Razon de Mexico newspaper. Irma was refused care by nurses who claimed that she wasn’t dilated enough. And that’s just the cherry on an otherwise craptastic sundae for Irma:
Mrs Lopez and her husband, of indigenous Mazatec ethnicity, were told that she was not far gone enough to be admitted into hospital, despite desperate pleas from the couple.
She said: ”˜I didn’t want to deliver like this. It was so ugly and with so much pain.’
The couple had walked for an hour from their one-bedroom hut in the mountaintops, in which they look after another two children.
In response to Irma’s ordeal, the director of said clinic has been suspended and an investigation has been launched. Some assert that her experience is not isolated:
”˜The photo is giving visibility to a wider structural problem that occurs within indigenous communities,’ said Mayra Morales, Oaxaca’s representative for the national Network for Sexual and Reproductive Rights.
”˜Women are not receiving proper care. They are not being offered quality health services, not even a humane treatment.’
Luckily, Irma gave birth to a healthy baby boy who she named Salvador. Oh, and get this, AFTER she gave birth, they let her into the clinic.
