The world woke up the news that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are officially engaged! The rumors have been swirling for months, but it’s not royally official until they get a fancy palace press release. The couple has been dating since last summer, and got engaged earlier this month. The palace announced that the wedding will take place in Spring 2018 (Royal Dress Watch starts … now!). But who is Meghan Markle? Here’s everything you need to know about the future Duchess.
Meghan Markle, 36, was born and raised in Los Angeles. She attended Northwestern University and graduated with a degree in Communications.
Meghan graduated from Immaculate Heart High School in 1999.
Meghan got her big break as an actress in 2011, when she landed the role of Rachel Zane on the hit show Suits.
The show is now in it’s 7th season. Meghan has also appeared on CSI: Miami, General Hospital, and in the films Horrible Bosses and Remember Me.
In 2016, Meghan became a global ambassador for World Vision. She traveled to Rwanda to witness firsthand the impact of the organization’s clean water initiatives.
In a column she wrote for Elle UK, Meghan says that fame brings with it opportunity, but also a responsibility “to advocate and share, to focus less on glass slippers and more on pushing through class ceilings.”
Meghan Markle: Proud to be a feminist.
Meghan was named the UN Women’s Advocate for Political Participation and Leadership in 2015, and in her speech at a conference on International Women’s Day 2015, she reiterated her commitment to gender equality.
Earlier this year, she wrote an op-ed for Time Magazine, about the global stigma surrounding menstruation.
She spoke of the wasted potential of young girls who are forced to miss school when they’re on their period. Meghan advocates for access to clean water, sanitary supplies, and an open conversation about the most natural thing in the world.
Meghan is divorced from film producer Trevor Engelson.
The couple was married for two years, before divorcing in 2013.
She met Prince Harry in 2016, when they were introduced by mutual friends (I need friends like this).
The two dated in secret before Harry confirmed their relationship in November of last year. In a rare move, Kensington Palace issued warning to the press, after Meghan was subjected to abuse and harassment.
Meghan is biracial, the daughter of an African-American mother and Caucasian father.
She’s spoken openly about her struggle to find her voice as a mixed-race woman. In 2015, she wrote about her identity for Elle Magazine: “To describe something as being black and white means it is clearly defined. Yet when your ethnicity is black and white, the dichotomy is not that clear. In fact, it creates a grey area. Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating.”
When Meghan was 11, she wrote to then-First Lady Hillary Clinton, to complain about a sexist advertisement she saw on TV.
Says Meghan, “Sitting in a school classroom when I was 11 years old, a dish-washing liquid commercial came on a TV with the tagline, ‘Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.’ The boys yelled out, ‘Yeah, that’s where women belong. In the kitchen.'” After her letter writing campaign, the ad tagline was changed from “Women” to “People”.
In 2014, Meghan created The Tig, a lifestyle website dedicated to travel, food, fashion, and beauty.
The website was shuttered earlier this year, but Meghan has denied that it had anything to do with her relationship with Harry.
While attending the Invictus Games with Harry in September, Meghan wore a dress by designer Artizia.
The dress sold out immediately everywhere, cementing her future as a fashion icon.
Kensington Palace announced that the wedding between Harry and Meghan would take place in Spring 2018.
While it remains to be seen what will happen with Meghan’s career once she officially becomes a royal, we’re sure that Meghan will use her new role much in the same way Diana did and Kate does: to continue her humanitarian efforts around the globe, and break through stodgy palace walls. We can’r wait to see where she goes from here!
The ring has three diamonds, two from Princess Diana’s personal collection.
In their first interview since announcing their engagement, Prince Harry reveals the ring was designed by himself in a yellow gold with three diamonds.
She has two dogs
It’s hard not to love dog people and in her first interview since the engagement, Meghan says she has two rescue dogs and one of them has been in the UK with her for a while.
