Kris Jenner & Jada Pinkett Smith Probably Didn’t Set Up Their Teens, But I Wouldn’t Put It Past Them

Kris & Kendall JennerThe tabloids love to make up stories about who’s dating who, who might possibly date who in the future, who wishes they could date who. It’s part of the fun of the entertainment world, constructing fantasy relationships and pretending that we know all about them. So when the gossip-mongers claim that Kris Jenner and Jada Pinkett Smith arranged for their children to start dating, it really feels like just another extension of our imaginary celeb relationship machine.

Media Take Out, known for their allergy to honesty, says that the two momagers struck a deal that includes 14-year-old Jaden Smith dating 17-year-old Kendall Jenner. Of course, the couple would be seen going on dates to PG-13 movies and hanging out at a mall somewhere. The whole thing would be broaden the exposure of the two young stars and get them more into the public eye. It’s all a bunch of nonsense.

At the same time, as I read the story, I could totally see a mother like Kris Jenner arranging dates for her teen daughters to other celebrity kids. Even though this particular story isn’t true at all, I feel like that’s probably something that happens. Jenner sits around with a list of acceptable names and weighs their pros and cons before choosing the perfect suitor and calling his publicist. I think it’s probably like when Anne Hathaway had to find a husband in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

My wonderful co-worker Maria brought up a good point. What teenager would let their mother arrange a relationship for them? At the same time, I don’t feel like these moms have a normal maternal relationship with their kids. They manage their children’s careers. And we’re talking about teenagers with careers. It’s a little different than your mom telling you that her best friend’s son “has really matured over the summer.”

Do relationships pop up in Hollywood specifically for the purpose of gaining press and publicity? Hello there Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson! Why yes, that happens. Would moms like Kris Jenner do absolutely anything to promote their kids? I think a mother who tells her daughter to make a sex tape is probably just fine telling her teenager to fake date someone. Even if he is a lot shorter than her.

I don’t know exactly how forceful of a momager Jada Pinkett Smith is, but I don’t think this story sounds unbelievable at all from the Kris Jenner point of view. In fact, I would be shocked if Jenner weren’t jockeying to find the perfect PR mate for her younger daughters.
