Alabama College Football Fans Name Their Son ‘Krimson Tyde’ And The Internet Goes Nuts

As someone who doesn’t really get into sports, the truly rabid, superfans baffle me. And I think it’s safe to categorize Summer and Steven Steele as superfans. Why? because, to honor their deep love for the college football team the Alabama Crimson Tide, they named their newborn son “Krimson Tyde.” Yes, that is the correct spelling.

The Internet, being, well, the Internet, went nuts on the couple after they posted a birth announcement about their adorable, seven pound five ounce new baby to Twitter. According to Summer:

“The reason we named him Krimson is that we are big Alabama fans, and it is a very unique name and we loved it.”

Now, I’m not particularly a fan of these “unique” names that keep popping up, but come on people. Here is just a taste of the vitriol.

Krimson Tyde
We all know what this means…

As annoying and upsetting as these comments (and the literal hundreds of others) are, little Krimson’s parents are taking the high road. In an interview with AL.com, Summer said:

“To people speaking negatively about us naming him Krimson, it’s not their child nor family member so if they have nothing nice to say they don’t need to say nothing nothing at all.”

I get it, it’s not a name most people would choose for their kid. And yes, it might be setting the poor kid up for a hard time as he gets older. But here’s the thing: it’s none of our damn business. I don’t think that everyone and their mother has a right to say awful shit to someone online just because they chose to post a birth announcement. Period. Are people going to do it anyway? Of course, but just because you can doesn’t mean you aren’t still an asshole.
