Kim Kardashian’s Joke About Using the Flu for Weight Loss Is Making the Internet Very Angry

Having the flu is awful, and one would normally feel nothing but sympathy for a mother of two very small children who is laid up with a serious case of stomach flu. But a flu-stricken Kim Kardashian took time between vomiting to post on Twitter about how great it would be for weight loss, and the Internet is not having it.

According to Refinery 29, Kim Kardashian has been laid up with the flu, and yesterday she made a very unfortunate comment about it.

“The flu can be an amazing diet. So happy it came in time for the Met lol #6lbsdown,” Kim Kardashian wrote.

Oh dear. That’s not good. Kardashian might have been trying to make a joke, but it didn’t sound like she was really kidding, and it’s not a good joke to be making anyway, especially with a follower count like she has.

It’s not an unreasonable bit of gallows humor that one might groan from under the toilet to one’s best friend or partner after a few days of fever and uncontrollable vomiting.

“A few more days of this and I’ll be at my goal weight,” a sweating, gross, bleary person might groan.

But Kim Kardashian isn’t gross and bleary and whining to her best friend when she posts to Twitter, she’s stunning and glamorous in every photo and talking to 51.1 million people, many of whom are girls and young women who actually look up to her and think she’s cool and want to copy everything she does. And a lot of people have a very complicated, unhealthy view of food and weight, and intentionally or not, her words did come off as glamorizing vomiting as a means of weight loss.

“Good thing I got this stomach flu! Now I can vomit off six pounds and hit my goal weight before putting on my haute couture gown to go to the Met Gala to hang out with Anna Wintour and all the rich and fabulous fashion people.”

Kardashian sounds like Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada, but without Blunt’s fantastic delivery and the fact that Blunt’s character is supposed to be awful.

Kardashian also lacks an Anne Hathaway to look at her and communicate to the audience, “This woman is out of her damn mind,” so the rest of Twitter came aboard to play that role. Kardashian’s followers posted the above GIF repeatedly, and also pointed out that people actually die of the flu every year””that’s why pregnant women are so encouraged to get flu shots””-and that she shouldn’t be glamorizing sickness for weight loss.

“Anything for thinness” is a bad message to be sending. It might be difficult to give oneself the stomach flu on purpose, but lots of people make themselves vomit because they think it will make them lose weight. Even arranging a case of food poisoning is not unheard of.

Kardashian later deleted the post without comment. Maybe she realized the complaints were right.
