Kathy Griffin’s Trump-Themed Photoshoot Misses The Mark, Bigly

Comedian Kathy Griffin has sparked intense outrage after images from a recent photoshoot she participated in leaked online. In one of the images, Griffin is holding a bloody, severed head that bears a striking resemblance to President Donald Trump. The picture, which is a still from a video, has people from both sides of the aisle weighing in to condemn it.

Griffin and photographer Tyler Shields brainstormed several ideas for the photoshoot. Shields told BuzzFeed News, “I said, ‘OK, how crazy do you want to get?'” Shields recalled. “And she was like, ‘I’m ready and willing to push any or all boundaries. I’m down to get political, to get naked, to do whatever.'”

The image is…really fucking terrible.

Despite immediate backlash, Griffin at first defended the image. “1/ I caption this “there was blood coming out of his eyes, blood coming out of his…wherever” Also @tylershields great Photog/film maker,” she wrote. “2/ OBVIOUSLY, I do not condone ANY violence by my fans or others to anyone, ever! I’m merely mocking the Mocker in Chief.” Shields also defended the picture to BuzzFeed. “Trump is the social media president,” Shields said. “He is the most polarizing president we’ve ever had. With any type of person like that, art is going to be made about them.”

Several hours later, Griffin issued her mea culpa via Instagram.

“I sincerely apologize. I am just now seeing the reaction to these images. I’m a comic. I crossed the line. I moved the line and then I crossed it. I went way too far. The images is too disturbing, I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny, I get it. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career. I will continue. I ask your forgiveness. I’m taking down the image. I am going to ask the photographer to take down the image, and I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong,” she said in the statement.

Unfortunately for Griffin, it’s too little, too late. A planned endorsement deal for Squatty Potty has been pulled, and CNN just announced they are dropping Griffin from their annual New Year’s Eve show with Anderson Cooper.

The image was widely condemned by politicians, Chelsea Clinton, and even the President himself.

I actually agree with Donald Trump. There’s a first time for everything.
