This Duggar Engagement Video Is So Awkward

We’ve all come to expect a certain amount of cringeworthiness from the Duggar family. It seems like every week they do something … weird. Not weird by their standards, obviously. But DEFINITELY weird by regular society norms. Earlier this week, we learned that Josiah Duggar got engaged to Lauren Swanson. They had a fairly short courtship, then they got engaged, so chances are there’ll be a wedding and baby by this time next year. That’s not what’s weird (I mean it is, but not in this context). The awkward engagement video posted on the Duggar family YouTube channel though is something.

Josiah Duggar popped the question a few days ago, and Lauren said yes. I wonder if any of these girls ever say no? I’d watch THAT episode of the show.

In the video posted to the Duggar family channel, Jim Bob and Michelle talk to Josiah and Lauren about god and marriage and whatnot. Michelle says they “LOVE Lauren”, and she really emphasized the love. Sorry to any girls who marry into that family who don’t get such an enthusiastic welcome.

The whole thing is weird, but what sticks out is Lauren.

She seems … supremely uncomfortable. She barely says a word, and clings to Josiah’s arm as if she’s just not fully comprehended what she’s gotten herself into. Their physical contact seems to fly in the face of some of the insane Duggar family rules.

I don’t necessarily feel sorry for anyone who gets tangled up with the Duggar clan. I mean, they’ve been on TV and in the tabloids for long enough that you’d have to have been living under a rock to avoid them. But as much Duggar shit as I’ve covered, for some reason, Lauren in this video rubs me the wrong way.

I hope she fully appreciates what’d coming. She’ll be married and pregnant in an insanely short amount of time. However, she doesn’t seem entirely ready for this whole weird life. Best of luck to you, kiddo.
