Jon Stewart Slams Megyn Kelly For Two-Faced Stance On Maternity Leave
Earlier this week, we reported on Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly‘s awesome “I am woman, hear me roar” moment in which she humiliated radio host Mike Gallagher on national television. Gallagher had commented on Kelly having been on maternity leave for too long, and how it’s a “racket” that women get to stay home with their babies while men don’t. Oy!
Whatever your opinion of Kelly, you had to hand it to her for blasting Gallagher like that and standing up for a woman’s right to bond with her baby. “Maternity leave is a racket?” she asked him. “What a moronic thing to say! . . . What is it about getting pregnant and carrying a baby for nine months that doesn’t deserve a few months of recovery and bonding?” She also set him straight on paternity leave, explaining that men, too, have a right to take time off work to bond with his child. Gallagher sheepishly claimed to have been drinking that day.
Now it’s Kelly’s turn for embarrassment. On last night’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart recovered old footage of Kelly complaining about paternity leave. He aired a clip (below) that shows Kelly speaking out against the “entitlement” of paternity and maternity leave, calling it “anti-capitalist” and forcefully arguing with a guest who dared to say that men should be granted paternity leave on par with women’s maternity leave.
The best part of this whole thing is Stewart (my ’80s late-night TV crush), who not only picked up on Kelly’s sudden change of heart but who attributed it to a case of “postpartum compassion.” Ha!
