January Jones Talks Placenta Pills: ‘It’s Not Witch-Crafty!’

January JonesWell now, placentophagy just got a high-profile new spokesperson. On the seemingly never-ending Mad Men publicity tour, January Jones has spent a lot of time talking about her new life as a single working mother. Now, she’s moved on to the controversial parenting practice of turning your afterbirth into placenta pills and ingesting them.

The actress says that these pills have been the key to keeping up her energy during her grueling production schedule for Mad Men. She told People,  ”Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins. It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas.”

Personally, I paid very little attention to my afterbirth. I’m sure it came out, but I was a little distracted by the new baby that I couldn’t wait to hold. I was counting fingers and toes and crying with joy. My placenta just really wasn’t on my mind.

But this practice is definitely gaining in popularity, and the mere fact that Jones talked about it to the press shows placenta encapsulation’s growing fan-base among new moms. That being said, the actress has to realize the normal reaction that eating placenta can generate. She took the time to assure everyone, ”It’s not witch-crafty or anything! I suggest it to all moms!”

Jones got her placenta pills from her doula, but if you’re interested in trying it at home, here’s a dehydration and encapsulation kit to try for yourself. But you have to let us know how it all works out!

Have you tried placenta pills? Would you ever consider eating your afterbirth?
