Ivanka Trump Took Her Father’s Seat at the G20 Summit and People Have a Lot of Thoughts

Another day, another crazy banana pants story coming out of the White House. Last week, President Donald Trump attended the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, along with other members of his administration and his advisors ””including his daughter, Ivanka Trump.

As is customary, aides and advisors to the different leaders often sit in on meetings. However, when Trump briefly left a meeting, instead of one of the members of his cabinet taking his place at the table, Trump’s seat was filled by his daughter.

And oh, did Twitter have thoughts about Ivanka Trump.

Brian Klaas writes, “Ivanka Trump, unelected, unqualified, daughter-in-chief, is representing the US at the G20 summit next to May, Xi, Merkel. Photo @LanaLukash”

“Why the hell is Ivanka Trump sitting in for daddy at G20 meetings?! What are her qualifications? Who voted for her?,” tweeted Charles M. Blow.

Others wondered how they could get that wild chance, too. “Based on Ivanka Trump example, I’m going to ask Speaker Ryan if my son can sit in for me at the next House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing,” Ted Lieu tweeted.

Seriously, she’s not been elected for anything and this did not go unnoticed. “Sort of the whole point of America was that governmental authority was bestowed by the people not by birth.”

George Takei joked (well, probably with a lot of truth behind it), “Ivanka, couldn’t you have at least re-admitted us to the Paris Climate Accords during your brief reign?” and people tweeted back a variety of responses, including wondering where President Trump went, if they’re “grooming” Ivanka for her own political run later. Seriously, what’s going on?

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was the host leader for this year’s summit, told Bloomberg News that “The delegations themselves decide, should the president not be present for a meeting, who will then take over and sit in the chair. Ivanka Trump was part and parcel of the American delegation…It’s very well known that she works at the White House.”

No word on how sarcastically the Chancellor made that comment.
