It’s About Time: Girl With Down Syndrome Is Face Of Major Swimwear Campaign

down syndrome dolores cortesBack in January, Target received major props for including Ryan, a child with Down Syndrome, as one of five young models in a holiday ad campaign. What’s cool is that they managed to be inclusive without making a big deal out of the whole thing (which is pretty much how Sesame Street has always operated). Now Spanish swimwear designer Dolores Cortes is following suit with a new campaign starring Valentina Guerrero, a 10-month-old Miami girl with Down Syndrome.

Valentina appears on the cover of Dolores Cortes’ USA catalog, and she’s also the face of the brand’s 2013 DC Kids ads. “People with Down Syndrome are just as beautiful and deserve the same opportunities. I’m thrilled to have Valentina modeling for us,” said Cortes, who will donate 10% of this collection’s profits to the Down Syndrome Association of Miami.

As you can see from the photo above, Valentina has one of the most gorgeous smiles around it’s no wonder Cortes chose her as the face of DC Kids. That said, not many prestigious designers would do the same since there’s still a stigma attached to anyone who doesn’t fit a specific mold especially when it comes to modeling. Kudos to Cortes for breaking that mold and for helping to create more visibility for children with Down Syndrome.
