If you’re a mom, you’re obviously really cool. You know what’s up, and the odds are that you use Facebook””to keep in touch with friends and family and post pictures of your adorable baby all over your private corner of the Internet. I don’t blame you. I do the same thing. If you’re really cool, you may even use Twitter. But we don’t have to go there just yet.

If you’ve ever used a mom-friendly hashtag on Facebook, like #lovemyfamilybecausetheysmellgreatandhavenicehair, you’re doing it wrong. You probably have no idea because everyone else is doing it too, so it’s perfectly okay. But I’m here to help you with your hashtag problem so that you can stop contributing to the madness on social media and start hashtagging like the pros.

Get your hashtagging-thumb ready and use these 10 simple tips the next time you post a cute Saturday afternoon family pic to your newsfeed:

1. Understand the purpose of hashtags.

According to FACEBOOK itself: Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links in your posts on your personal Timeline or Page. This helps people find posts about topics they’re interested in. To make a hashtag, write # (the number sign) along with a topic or phrase (written as one word) and add it to your post.

2. Use hashtags to punctuate a Facebook post.

You can use hashtags whenever you damn well please, just make sure to add them to the end of your Facebook post. A few hashtags scattered in a post is a-okay, but a post made up entirely of hashtags is impossible to read.

3. Keep it short.

Since hashtags are for clickable or searchable purposes, long, elaborate hashtags make no sense because no one else in the world will use them. Please stop doing this right now.

hashtag3

4. Keep it simple.

Don’t abuse the hashtag trend. There’s no need to exceed more than one line of hashtags after your Facebook post.

hashtag4

5. Check your spelling.

Hashtags are kind of confusing since they are all jumbled together””take a moment to recheck what you type before you post. It happens to the best of us.

hashtag5

6. Use uppercase or lowercase letters.

Uppercase and lowercase letters don’t affect search results, so take your pick: #lovemyboys or #LoveMyBoys makes no difference.

hashtag6

7. Don’t use punctuation.

Hashtags do not include punctuation. They just don’t.

hashtag7

8. Click and search using hashtags.

The entire purpose of the hashtag is to add a searchable link to your Facebook post. Facebook adds: When you click a hashtag, you’ll see a feed of posts that include that hashtag. You’ll also see some related hashtags at the top. You can search for a hashtag using the search bar at the top of any page.

9. Don’t advertise using hashtags.

If you’re a momtrepreneur who owns her own business, please don’t use the lovable hashtag to advertise your company on every single Facebook post. This is pretty skeezy, and your friends won’t like it.

hashtag9

10. Don’t say ”hashtag” IRL.

This is awkward. Please don’t do this, unless you are Justin Timberlake or Jimmy Fallon.
