Student Arrested For Child Porn Due To iPhone Pic And I Have Zero Sympathy For Her

In May, a 15-year-old in Land ‘O Lakes, Florida had her cell phone taking away by her teacher because the teacher thought she was cheating on a test. When the teacher investigated the student’s iPhone, she discovered a photo of two kids engaging in oral sex, one of which was the owner of the phone. The school alerted authorities, because having pictures of juveniles engaging is sex is illegal, and the owner of the phone was arrested on July 3rd. Not only does the girl who took the snap face jail time and having to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life, but she had sent the photo to an 18-year-old who posted the pic on Twitter, who may now face more serious charges because he is an adult.

I felt awful for the girl in this case because as a mom of my own teenager, I can fully understand that teens are stupid. And thoughtless. Her parents obviously never gave her the twice-monthly “YOU DO NOT TAKE OR SHARE OR ACCEPT NUDE OR QUESTIONABLE PHOTOS” lecture that I give my own kids. But reading the report on The Smoking Gun, the girl sorta sounds like a punkass:

The day after her phone was taken, the girl sent a message from her Twitter account to a friend about the incident. The girl, who apparently had traveled to Europe, seemed unconcerned in the May 22 tweet about the iPhone seizure: ”the school took my phone, long story and im in Ireland lmaoooooo.”

LMAO, really? We will see how funny you find this whole thing when you can’t get into college or get a decent job because you have a criminal record. And yeah, I don’t know the whole story and maybe they had to attend a funeral or had some huge family emergency but if your kid was facing a child porn rap would you really take them off to Europe? It seems like the worst time to take a family trip is when your kid is facing charges of possession of child porn. And to get my Judgey McJudgerson even more on, the girl has a tattoo on her neck. Even though I’m a fan of body art and I think some tattoos are cool, a 15-year-old girl should not have a neck tattoo.

I think it’s good that schools are starting to take this whole social media/cell phone image sharing thing a bit more seriously, because we all know the horror stories that result in kids sharing this type of thing results in. Kids will have sex before we feel they are ready. It’s just what they do. I just wish that more parents would explain to their teens that just as important as birth control is never taking photos of their sex acts and definitely never sharing them with each other like Pokemons.
