Meet Lucas, the Newest Gerber Baby and First Child with Down Syndrome to Represent the Brand

My goodness, just look at his sweet little smile! Gerber announced the newest Gerber Baby spokesbaby, and it’s a historical and monumental choice. Little Lucas Warren, 18-months-old, was chosen out of more than a hundred thousand entries. What makes it so incredibly special is that Lucas is the first baby in the history of the contest who has Down Syndrome. It’s a huge win for families with kids with disabilities. Representation matters!

The Gerber Baby contest started in 1927, shortly after the company was founded. Since then, 91 babies have been the face of the baby food brand. But Lucas is special, for so many reasons.

He is the first baby with Down Syndrome to become the face of Gerber. That’s huge! I mean, he’s cute as all get out, so obviously he’s the perfect choice. But Lucas being named the Gerber Baby means so much more for so many families and kids all over the world.

Kristin Wooten, a spokesperson for Gerber, told CNN, “Every year, since the beginning of the Gerber Baby Photo Search, we choose the baby who exemplifies Gerber’s longstanding heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby, and Lucas is a perfect fit.”

Lucas and his family live in Dayton, OH. Winning the Gerber Baby contest means Lucas will get $50,000 in prize money, and will be featured on Gerber’s social media channels and in ads throughout the year. His mom Cortney entered him in the contest on a whim. She says, “We hope this opportunity sheds light on the special needs community and educates people that with acceptance and support, individuals with special needs have the potential to change the world — just like our Lucas.”

“He may have Down syndrome, but he’s always Lucas first. He’s got an awesome personality and he goes through the milestones of every child”, Cortney told Mashable. Congratulations, Lucas! Looking forward to seeing your sweet smiling face all year!
