Feds Release List Of 55 Colleges Facing Federal Sexual Assault Investigations, And It’s About Time
Today the Department of Education released a list of dozens of universities that are facing Title IX sexual assault investigations. Title IX is the federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in schools that receive federal funding ”” including in their athletics programs. It’s about time these universities are taken to task for their inability to take sexual assault cases seriously.
This week, a task force convened by President Obama met to figure out a way to curb campus sexual assault. One of the things the task force decided was to create greater transparency in their Title IX investigative process. If colleges were adept at handling campus assault we probably wouldn’t need this list, would we?
For example, Florida State’s star athlete Jameis Winston just won a Heisman trophy, a month after state prosecutors revealed that they would not press charges stemming from a rape allegation. FSU never even held a disciplinary hearing to deal with the allegations. Universities that don’t take allegations seriously or that place the careers of athletes over the safety and well-being of their students are the reason a list like this needs to exist.
Yesterday, The White House also released a PSA starring Steve Carrel, Daniel Craig and others as part of their campaign to curb sexual assault.
Here is the full list. It will be updated as new investigations start and others are closed.
