In the HBO documentary about the case, Mommy Dead and Dearest, an expert on Munchausen syndrome by proxy says that Gypsy’s behavior after the murder suggests she also suffers from some sort of sociopathy. Michelle Dean, the investigative journalist who covered the case for Buzzfeed, also has some concerns. Dean says, “I do think Gypsy is potentially dangerous. Dee Dee was a master manipulator. It’s impossible that Gypsy would not have picked this up and used it.”
Gypsy herself seems to acknowledge that her mother may have left an indelible mark on her. She told Buzzfeed, “I’ve been raised to do what my mother taught me to do. And those things aren’t very good. She taught me to lie, and I don’t wanna lie. I want to be a good, honest person.”
