Drop-side rail cribs are so yesterday. No, really, they are. New federal safety rules take effect in the U.S. next week that will ban the manufacture and sale of these popular cribs. And for good reason: since 2000, 32 infant suffocation and strangulation deaths were associated with drop-side cribs.

This is a wake-up call to parents like myself who still own one of these ancient devices (mine’s a hand-me-down and it’s at least 12 years old). I figure now’s a good time to switch my 2-year-old into a big-kid bed. But for those still in the crib stage of parenthood, there’s a slew of stylish options on the market.
