Republican Says Brutal Craiglist Attack On Pregnant Woman Is ‘God’s Punishment’ For Legal Abortion
Last week in Colorado, a seven-month pregnant woman was lured to another woman’s home via an ad on Craiglist, hoping to buy some baby clothes. She was brutally attacked; the woman stabbed her several times and removed her fetus from her body. Horrific. Truly the stuff that nightmares are made of. The clearly disturbed woman then brought the baby to a hospital, claiming she’d had a miscarriage. Baby died. Mother survived.
A Colorado Republican now insists the attack happened as God’s punishment for legal abortion in the state. State Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt (R-Colorado Springs) talked about the case on his “Pray In Jesus Name” program. Here’s some of what he said:
”I wonder if there is prophetic significance to America today in that scripture,” Klingenschmitt said. ”This is the curse of God upon America for our sin of not protecting innocent children in the womb ”” and part of that curse for our rebellion against God as a nation is that our pregnant women are ripped open.”
Raw Story reports the Klingenschmitt is referring to a passage from Hosea, “in which God curses the Samaritans for their rebellion and warns ‘their little ones shall be dashed in pieces, and their pregnant women ripped open.'”

It’s terrifying that someone who holds this fundamental, literal belief of the Old Testament is actually entrusted to help pass legislation. We can not advance as a society, especially in regards to the rights of women, if we turn a blind eye to this kind of blatant ignorance and misogyny. Why do religious zealots get a pass? Why do they get to say remarkably offensive, ridiculous things and keep their jobs?
Because too many people don’t take the war on women in this country seriously, that’s why. So there will be soundbites and people will laugh at what a moron this guy is, then the story will fade away, and he’ll still have a job and be able to affect legislation in his state. Unbelievable.
