Bride’s Viral Wedding Invite Is A Win For Anyone Who’s Dealt With Abusive Family

What do you do when your awful family is trying to weasel their way into your wedding, even though they treated you terribly your entire life and you hate them with the intensity of 1,000 burning suns? If you are in this predicament, maybe you can just steal this brilliant wedding invite that was posted to Reddit.

The invite was posted a few months ago, but is just now circulating wildly around the internet. The poster says:

So my narcissistic parents abused me for 16 years before I ran away from home. Now they’re trying to bully their way (via family, they haven’t bothered to speak to me personally) into getting an invitation to my wedding. There was really only one way to respond.

Here it is:

“Because fuck you that’s why” is my new go-to response. Thank you, Alex and Alyssa.

In a perfect world, families would surround you with only love, support and happiness — but most of us don’t live in that perfect world. The stress of dealing with a difficult family member can be all-encompassing. My father and I had a terrible relationship — he abandoned me when I was 13, refused to give me his phone number for months, and spent years judging my life from afar. He still pulled the “you don’t call me enough” card until the day he died.

This may seem like a small attempt at humor to some, but to those of us who have dealt with emotionally abusive family members — it’s a big, brave, win. Alyssa and Alex didn’t succumb to the pressure of their narcissistic parents, they took a stand for their own happiness — and they did it in a way that brought them some laughter. We can all learn from this.

I get to be happy and I don’t care if you like it or not.

Because fuck you that’s why.
