Anti-Gay Politican Secretly Donates Sperm To Lesbians, Backhandedly Blames Wife

Bill Johnson has some major issues. Like, really major ones. Here’s the deal: the politician he unsuccessfully ran for Alabama governor in 2009 and has crusaded against same-sex marriage is married to Kathy Johnson, a two-time Mrs. America finalist who has three grown children from a former relationship. Kathy had a hysterectomy 10 years ago, which means that she and Johnson could not have any children together.

Anyway, Johnson moved to New Zealand back in February, without his wife, to help run the earthquake recovery in Christchurch. While there, he decided to go online and meet women who need help getting pregnant. Noble guy, right? Not so much. Turns out he’s made anonymous sperm donations to at least nine women, three of whom are now pregnant. (Oh, he’s financially supporting a bunch of them, too.)

Never mind that fertility clinics in the country say men shouldn’t provide sperm donations to more than four families. Never mind the hyprocisy of donating your sperm to same-sex couples despite being anti-gay (even though I guess that makes him less bigoted than I thought). The most despicable part of this whole thing is that Johnson neglected to tell his wife!

The New Zealand Herald reports that when they approached Johnson as we was leaving a restaurant with one of the women he impregnated, he hinted that his wife is actually responsible for his sudden interest in sperm donation and that the urge to become a biological father was “a need that I have.”

“There is nothing my wife would want to give me more in the world than a child of my own,” he said. According to the report, Johnson had told his wife he wanted to act as a sperm donor; the couple sought counseling shortly after. But apparently Kathy had no idea he’d actually go ahead with his desires.

When asked by the Herald if his wife knew he was donating sperm, he said, “She does now.” (Shudder.) He went on to say that he had not planned on telling her until the children were born. (He had also not intended to make the donor recipients aware of the existence of other siblings until they had babies.)

Johnson also had this to say:

“Every person who is a father and a mother knows why I am doing this. If life’s circumstances had dealt me a different hand I wouldn’t be doing this. It is not the hand that life has dealt my wife.

“Reproduction and having children is as basic a human need as eating.”

Um, not true. I myself am a mother and I have no clue why he’s doing this. (Lousy argument, guy.)

Also, it disgusts me how Johnson seems to act surprised by the fact that he was “dealt this hand.” He married his wife knowing that they could not have children together plain and simple. I feel so sad for Kathy, who has not only learned that her husband is a big fat liar, but who’s also being made to feel guilty about not being able to provide him with a child of his own. Disgusting!

Here’s the icing on the cake: Johnson told the Herald he was trying to get his family to move to New Zealand, and he planned to be as involved in his babies’ lives as their mothers would allow him to be.
