16 Popular Baby Name Combinations For Twins

When choosing the perfect moniker for your twins, there are so many things to consider”¦ Do you want the twin names to rhyme? Do you want two names that start with the same letter? Would you prefer names that have a modern twist or a rich past. Then, there’s also the issue of whether your twins will be a boy and girl OR if you’ll have  two babies of the same sex? In either case, our list of fun name combinations will give you a great place to start and help put your mind at ease. Some of these names were chosen by celebrities, while others were so popular they made the 100 top twin name list of 2019.

Emma and Liam

According to the Social Security Administration, Emma and Liam were the most popular baby names in the United States in 2017- 2018. Emma is such a fitting and versatile name, it sounds great with almost any name on this list. It’s an old-fashioned name of German origin that means ‘universal.’ It can be short for Emmaline, Emmalyn, and Emmalee.  Famous Emmas include: Emma Stone and Emma Watson. Liam is of Irish origin and means ”with gilded helmet” or ”strong-willed warrior.” Famous celebs with this name include Liam Neeson and Liam Hemsworth.

Madison and Mackenzie/Madison and Mason

Both of these combos are amazing and sound great together. Not only do they share the same first letter, but you can get creative and use them for boy and girl twins or two girls. The name Madison gained its popularity back in the late 1980’s and 1990’s think Madison (Daryl Hannah): the mermaid from the movie Splash. Though it’s a surname, Madison (which is of English origin” means ”Son of Matthew”), most parents use this name as a girl’s name.

In the last five years, the name Mackenzie has gained momentum in the baby name category. It’s a unique unisex name that has a nice ring to it. Some parents like the name Mackenzie more as a girl’s name but other times it’s been tagged for boys as well.  

Mason is also of English origin and means ‘bricklayer/stone worker.’ Numerologists say children named Mason will obtain great power and wealth. This must have been what mega-millionaire and tv-personality, Kourtney Kardashian had in mind when she named her first child, Mason.  

Jada and Jaden/Jayden

The name Jada is derived from the word, ‘jade’ which means ‘precious stone.’ Thanks to celebs like Jada Pinkett-Smith, this name has become a very popular girl name especially within the African-American community. Jada Pinkett-Smith named her first-born, Jaden (rapper/actor) and the name Jaden has grabbed a lot of attention in the since 2008. Other famous Jaydens include Britney Spears’ son Jayden Federline. The spelling of the name (with/without the y) is merely based on preference.  Jada and Jaden make a fun name combination, but you may want to consider the fact that these names are easy to mix up — especially when you’re calling your kids from another room.

Sophia and Olivia/Oliver

Naming experts say names ending with ‘ia’ are coined as cute… the name Sophia is no exception. It’s an ancient Greek name adored by parents of Spanish and Italian descent. In Greek mythology, Sophia is the goddess of spiritual wisdom. When you match Sophia and Olivia (which means “olive tree”), you have something so elegant and almost regal. This is no surprise since the name Olivia has skyrocketed on the parent favorite list since 2014. Celebrity Sophias: Sophia Vergara, Sophia Bush, and Sophia Loren. Famous Olivias: Olivia Wilde (actress), Olivia Culpo (model), and Olivia Newton-John (Grease actress and singer).

Ava and Aiden

The name Ava can be brilliantly paired with so many names including Ava and Emma, Ava and Ella, and Ava and Mia. The list goes on and on… Our favorite is Ava and Aiden. Though the names start with the same letter, they don’t sound exactly the same.

Ava is of Latin origin and means ‘like a bird.’Reese Witherspoon took a liking to the name when she named her first-born Ava Elizabeth Phillippe. Other Avas have gone on to become legendary… Ava Garder (iconic actress and beauty) and Ava DuVernay (the first African-American director/screenwriter to win the Sundance Festival Director’s award).

Aiden: The name Aiden is a unique, strong moniker that means ‘little fire’. In addition to being paired with Ava, parents love to match Aiden with Ethan, Caden, and Addison.

Hazel and Finn

Hazel is a classic name celebs have made trendy over the last decade. In 2014, Emily Blunt and Jon Krasinski named their daughter Hazel — a biblical name that means “hazel tree”. In 2004, parents Julia Roberts and her husband, Daniel Moder had boy and girl twins. They chose Hazel for their girl and Phinnaeus for their son. Hazel and Phinnaeus sound like a smart pair, but most people will probably end up calling Phinnaeus, Finn for short; despite the fact that the two names are of completely different origins. Finn is Irish meaning “fair or white”, while Phinnaeus is of Hebrew origin, and means “oracle”.

Isabella is a beautiful, well-known name that can be shortened to ‘Bella’ for nickname/term of endearment. The name with a ‘lla’ at the end makes it sound elegant and very dainty. Isabella is the type of name that would go with many other names, and it’s often twinned up with the names Sophia, Elizabeth, Annabella, Gabriella, Issac, Isaiah. Hailey and Hannah

The name Hailey depending on how you spell it can mean many different things. If you spell it as  spelled as Haley or Hayley, an English surname, it is known as a combination of two words, hey (hay) and  leah which means a clearing or meadow.  Often, the spelling Haley is a name given to boys, and Hayley, to girls. If you spell the name as Hailey, you can use as a girl or boys name and the name takes on a newer meaning — ‘hero.’  How can you NOT like a (super)hero name?

In the Bible, Hannah is a Hebrew name that means ‘favor’ or ‘grace of God.’ Some parents choose to take off the ‘h’ at the end. Faith is the first of the three Christian virtues, and it means unwavering trust and belief in God/Higher Power.  Devote Christians believe it is an acronym for ‘Foresaking All I Trust Him.’ Faith is of Latin origin and became popular during the 17th century among Puritans. Many parents use the name today and it is especially favored among African-American families.

Hope is the second of the Christian virtues and it means a strong belief or expectation that something will happen. The names Faith and Hope… This is a beautiful twin name combination that is almost TOO perfect. The only thing that could make it any better is having a third child and her name be “Charity” (the third Christian virtue) or “Grace” (a similar religious moniker that means “God’s favor” and “love towards mankind”).

Ari and Ira

Ari is a beautiful unisex name that has been used for boys and girls, but mostly boys. The name means ‘Lion of God’ in Hebrew. It is a name that is short for Ariel. Girls will love this name because it reminds them of Disney’s favorite mermaid, Ariel from “The Little Mermaid”.

The name Ira which is obviously Ari spelled backwards makes the perfect twin name to an Ari. Ira is also of Hebrew origin, and it means “watchful”. Also in the Bible, Ira appears as King David’s priest.

Nevaeh (pronounced Ni-ve-ah) is Heaven spelled backwards, so this duo as a unique set of names is quite… for a better word… heavenly!  Nevaeh has gained popularity since the year 2006, and many parents have fallen in love with Heaven as well. According to babycenter.com, Nevaeh is listed as #84, and Heaven is #325 on the name popularity list. Surprisingly, Heaven has also been used as a boys name. It’s not that popular — ranking at##3916 — but we can see why parents would want this name for their child.

Zoe and Zac

Zoe (or Zoey) is a short but fierce name very prominent in the U.S. It’s of Greek origin meaning ‘life’  and ‘alive.’ The name usually has an umlaut over the ‘e’ to emphasize the second syllable. The name was originally translated by Hebrews, who derived its meaning from the name Eve. Famous Zoe celebs include Zoe Saldana and Zoe Kravitz. Twin name combinations include Zoe and Chloe, Zoe and Zachary. 

Zac also known as Zack, Zachary, and Zak is a name of English origin but is derived from Latin and Greek (Zacharias — remembrance of the Lord), Zecharya (which is Hebrew and means and it means ‘memory’ or God remembers’. Ella is of Old German origin and means ‘light’. In German, it is a derivative of the name “Alja” which means ‘all/entire’ or ‘other/foreign’. Ella is usually short for Ellen or Eleanor, and is considered a pet name for Alice. In A short form of Eleanor and Ellen meaning ‘light.’ In English, it means ‘beautiful fairy woman’. Great Ellas include Ella Fitzgerald and Ella T. Grasso.

In Hebrew, Ethan means “strong, firm, and long-lived. It’s  The name Ethan is of Hebrew origin.  Well-known Ethans include: Ethan Hawke, and Ethan Allen. London and Brooklyn

Naming children after popular locales has always been a thing, and the name London is at the top of the parents’ most wanted list.  The unisex name means ‘the great river’, and its elegance and popularity make it a great pick for girls and boys. It also pairs well with many other twin names including London and Landon, London and Paris, or London and Brooklyn. Brooklyn (also spelled Brooklyne) is also a cool unisex name and it means “pretty brook’. It’s actually a modern take on the names Brook and Lyn.

Trinity and Tristan

Trinity is a beautiful Latin name that’s sound modern and millennial (think Trinity from Keanu Reeves’ Matrix trilogies), but it’s actually rooted in Christianity and idea of “threefold” or “three-in-one”  — specifically the Holy Trinity which consists of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This religious name is considered a unisex name, but is used mostly for girls. Trinity (as a girl’s name) became popular amongst parents during the 20th century.

The name Tristan (sometimes referred to as “Tristram”) is an English/Celtic name very popular in Christianity and it means ‘outcry’,’tumult’ or ‘sorrowful.’ Most people remember the name from the Arthurian legend “Tristan and Isolde.”  In this romantic, medieval tale, Tristan was a Knight of the Round Table and a hero who falls in love with Isolde (who was promised to King Mark of Cornwall) after they both drank a poisonous potion.  Tristan is considered a unisex name, but most parents favor it as a boys name. The female counterpart of the name Tristan is Trista, but Trinity and Tristan has a nice ring to it.

Abigail and Matthew

Many parents are gravitating towards the name Abigail for their girls.  The name is #19 on the Baby Center name list. Abigail is a beautiful name derived from the original name ‘Avigayil’ and it means ‘a father’s joy.’ Abigail is also a Biblical name that refers to a woman in the Old Testament that was married to Nabal (a rich, surly Calebite), and when he died she became the third wife to King David. The Bible describes her as ‘intelligent’, ‘good in discretion and beautiful in form.’

Matthew is a classic boys name also rooted in Biblical origin. It was listed as #36 on the Baby Center list in 2019, but parents have loved this name since the 1960’s. English name is derived from the Hebrew name Matityahu, which means ‘gift from God.’ In the Bible, Matthew was one of Jesus’s apostles and he also wrote the first Gospel of the New Testament.
