Awesome Boy Credits Parents After Generous Baseball Demonstration

On the one hand, I’m not sure how much fuss should be made over what this cute kid Ian McMillan did at a recent Diamondbacks-Brewers game. Basically at the end of an inning, a Brewers player was getting off the field and tossed up a ball to a boy in the stands wearing a Brewers jersey. But the ball wasn’t caught and it dropped back onto the field. An usher picked it up and tossed it up in the stands where a young Diamondbacks fan caught it. This kid, Ian McMillan, took the ball back to his seat and was congratulated by his friends. But when he was told that the ball was actually intended for another kid — a kid who was crying over what had happened, it turns out — he promptly got up and gave it away to the first boy.

In the clip below, the boy is shown being rewarded with other goodies from Diamondbacks management and asked why he was so generous with the ball he’d gotten. He explains that it was the right thing to do and that his parents had raised him to be that way.

As soon as I heard that, I dreamed of the day when my children will be recognized on national television for some similar feat and they will immediately point to their gracious and generous — possibly almost perfect — parents as inculcators of wisdom and virtue.

Yeah right.

But still, it’s a good reminder that our children do listen to what we say and may surprise us at the way they live this out in life.
