President Obama Officially Backs Assault Weapons Ban In A Very Critical Response To Sandy Hook Shootings

shutterstock_56878993Shortly after the horrific Sandy Hook shootings, Diane Feinstein, Democratic Senator of California, said on national television that she was re-introducing an assault weapons ban on the very first day of the new Congress. And she just scored the support of a very important individual.

President Obama reportedly supports the proposal that would eliminate high-powered firearms from gun stores in the United States. Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, brings us the news:

“He is actively supportive of, for example, Sen. Feinstein’s stated intent to revive a piece of legislation that would reinstate the assault weapons ban,” Carney told reporters during his daily briefing from the White House on Tuesday, according to POLITICO…On Tuesday, Carney said the president “supports and would support legislation that addresses the problem of the so-called gun show loophole, and there are other elements of gun legislation that he could support ”¦ high capacity ammunition clips, for example. That is certainly something he would be interested in looking at.”

The original bill, which Feinstein also backed, passed Congress in 1994 but then expired in 2004. This new bill will prohibit the possession, transfer, importation and sale of assault weapons in addition to strips, clips, and drums of more than 10 bullets. The bill is slated to not be retroactive so no “Obama is coming to take your guns!” business

Previously, Feinstein said that there are still a whopping 900 “specific weapons” that her bill does not exclude. Nevertheless “weapons of war” will be no longer be so accessible — and if there’s one critical part of these devastating Sandy Hook shootings that has been vastly underscored in all the mourning for these victims — it’s that weapons of this capacity don’t need to be.

Full speed ahead on this legislation.
