The New A Wrinkle in Time Trailer Is Full of Diverse Goodness

Confession time: One of my favorite books of all time is A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L’Engle. I remember reading it in elementary school (and again a few more times in my life) and finding myself completely immersed in the world of tesseracts and other dimensions described in the book. Meg Murray (the main character, who just happened to be a bookish young girl) was my hero. There was a film adaptation made in 2013, but was about as white as I expected.

That said, the new “A Wrinkle In Time” trailer is full of diverse goodness, and I for one and extremely excited. See for yourself:

The teaser trailer first premiered this past weekend during Disney’s D23 Expo, an annual event for fans all about Disney movies. In it, you see just how aesthetically pleasing this new rendition of the film is going to be. But more importantly, you see something else: diverse characters. At a time when so many characters of color end up being played by white folks, it is exceedingly refreshing to see a variety of actors playing roles that frankly could be played by anyone. Because the thing about L’Engle’s book is that it is a work of fiction, and with fiction, we have leeway with which to expand our casting decisions beyond various tones of white.

So Who’s in the Cast of the New A Wrinkle In Time?

Of course, this might have something to do with the director behind the new adaptation: Ava DuVernay. If you’ve been living under a rock for a bit, you might be wondering who that is. So here’s a quick breakdown. DuVernay is the award-winning director and producer behind the films, “Selma,” and, “13th,” as well as the new hit show, “Queen Sugar.” She signed on for this latest project February of last year along with writer Jennifer Lee (writer and co-director of “Frozen”).

Among the excellent casting decisions are Storm Reid as the heroin of the story and eldest daughter of the story, Meg Murray, plus Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Which, Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, and Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit. And then of course there’s also Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Zach Galifinakis. Yeah, you’re excited now, too, aren’t you? Don’t worry, the film will be out soon enough: March 9th, 2018.
