Mommyish Poll: How Do We Feel About Matching Mother And Child Ensembles?

Miranda Kerr babyVictoria’s Secret Wonder Woman Miranda Kerr was photographed recently out and about in Sydney with her baby boy Flynn. And while looking incredibly stylish and put together for a mother with a 1-year-old, it was also reported that the mom and baby were sporting “matching stripes.”

Stripes aren’t exactly so unique that if I was photographed getting off the subway, I could technically be “matching” with several strangers. Besides, if you have a baby that young and you’re trying to get out of the house, it’s not like seeing the only clean pair of pants on your kid would prompt you to change your own top just because they’re the same color or design. (I’m sure Miranda doesn’t have encounter such mortal quandaries.)

Nevertheless, seeing a mother decked out in a striped maxi dress, her little tyke running around in a similarly patterned boat neck tee, could incite precisely two responses from playground company.

Oh, I think it’s adorable! My 3 year old loves it when we both wear jeggings, boots, and the same color top. She asks if we can dress alike now, but I’m sure when she gets to be about 13 she won’t request that anymore.

When my oldest was a baby, I was super-compulsive about making sure that every time we left the house, we were wearing coordinating outfits. One of the many reasons why I’m a much better mother of 3 than I was mother of 1…

Cute, but I would never refer to that photo as “matching outfits”.

I thought the same thing Abigail. I was looking at it thinking that maybe this was just a photo of the 2 but not in the outfits being questioned.

I don’t know, I think matching with your child can be cute depending on certain factors. If I had a son and he was a dead ringer for his father then yeah, having them wear a similar outfit could be cute. The same could be said about a mom and daughter. When I was pregnant I bought a mickey mouse shirt and it came with a matching onesie. I wore the shirt a few times after my daughter was born for pajamas when she was wearing hers.
What about parent and child sporting the same sports jersey, jeans, and baseball cap? Could be cute…but only up to a certain age I think.

      I agree!

My daughter is four. Sometimes it’s fun to put her in something similar – we both have black leggings, big sweaters, and boots. She likes to dress like me, and I don’t wear anything that would be innappropriate on a young girl.

I think you can cross the line when you see the mommy/daughter sundresses with matching bonnets, socks, and shoes, but two related people in stripes or shirts with the same theme? I’m not too worried.
