Janet Jackson Offers Sound Advice To Whitney Houston’s Daughter, Bobbi Kristina

Concerns for Whitney Houston‘s family following her death have boiled down to a real focus on her teenage daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown. While not evaluating her singing capabilities, the public’s condolences for the suicidal teen are immense. And even Janet Jackson, no stranger to familial loss and fame herself, shared some surprisingly concrete advice for the young woman.

The pop star made an appearance on Anderson Cooper‘s show in which she was asked what words of wisdom she had for Bobbi Kristina during this difficult time. Rather than just touting a collection of sweet sayings from a fortune cookie, Janet Jackson immediately addressed the differences between her personal loss and that of Bobbi’s. Both ladies may have lost icons, but she instantly addressed the profound space between losing a brother versus a mother.

She also advocated not holding on too long to those feelings of loss, telling Anderson:

“I didn’t want to accept it. It’s very difficult. You have to come to terms at some point; you have to give it up to God. It sounds so mean but you have to move on. You can’t hold on to that because it can be very devastating.”

Most importantly, Janet also brought up therapy for Bobbi as sometimes “the best thing” for ultimately coping with a loss. [tagbox tag=”Whitney Houston”]

Anderson spoke of his own experiences with grief as he famously lost his brother to suicide. The journalist questioned the validity of the term “closure,” describing the it as “a made-up TV word.”

At times in which iconic people pass, the tendency is often to exchange nothing more than the sentiments of Hallmark cards on endless tribute specials and such without saying much constructive. Bobbi Kristina may not be flipping on the TV much this week, but Janet’s suggestion of therapy and even religious comfort seem sound in a conversation that so often becomes a Lifetime Special.
