Classroom Masturbation Incident Involved ‘Gay Test’  As If That Explains It!

gay testLast week we wrote about nine students who were suspended from a San Diego middle school after watching porn on their cell phones and masturbating in class. Good times! Some say teacher Ed Johnson turned a blind eye, while others claim he just wasn’t aware of the situation. Either way, it’s kind of crazy that the whole thing happened in the first place (in the classroom, that is).

Now students say the incident began as part of a “gay test” or “sexual orientation test” which means whoever got turned on while watching the videos is labeled gay. Needless to say, it’s a ridiculous concept, and it’s sad that this is happening among teens.

Patti Boman of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays calls it disturbing. ”I was thinking we were getting better and that’s why we go out and speak in schools. This is news to me and this gives me chills. It is terrible,” she told U-T San Diego News. ”They use that to attack and intimidate.”

Meanwhile, the San Diego Reader spoke with one of the nine suspended students, 13-year-old Aaron Masters. He had this to say about the porn-masturbation incident:

“This is the school’s own fault. They’re always encouraging us to explore our sexuality you know, so that we don’t wind up ashamed of being gay. So we did some exploring. We fired up some gay porn on our phones the school has no rule against that and checked to see who sprouted wood. Some dudes actually started masturbating right there in class. So yeah, we said that people who spanked it to gay porn were gay. And for that, we’re haters who deserve suspension?

If it’s the masturbation part they have a problem with, well, excuse me for being 13. What do they expect us to do not masturbate? Sorry, it’s perfectly normal and natural Mr. Peters said so in Health class. And there weren’t any girls around, so it can’t be treated as sexual harassment.

Besides, if they didn’t want us talking about who was gay and who wasn’t, they shouldn’t have had us reading A Separate Peace. That shit is totally gay.”

(Not to belittle what is a very serious issue, but can we just break for a moment and acknowledge how freakin’ hilarious this entire quote is?)

Obviously bullying is a huge issue, and it’s sad to be reminded that gay teens often make for popular targets. The whole idea of a “gay test” is absurd, though it’s clearly happening in god knows how many schools, camps, after-school activities, etc, across the country. Of course, we only have half the story with regards to this particular incident, but it doesn’t change the fact that kids can be cruel.
