Bob Geldof, Hypocrite, Begs Peaches To Change Her Baby’s Name

peaches geldof baby astalaThe man who named his kids Peaches, Fifi Trixibelle and Pixie hates his grandson’s baby name. That’s right, Sir Bob Geldof of Boomtown Rats fame has criticized Peaches for naming her newborn Astala. Apparently, he finds it too unusual. Hypocrite much? Geldof told The Sun:

Yuck! What’s he going to be called in school? Ass? Stella? It’s a girl’s name, let’s face it.”

Oh, the irony. Peaches’ middle name, by the way, is Honeyblossom. Some people have argued the unusual names were chosen by Geldof’s late ex-wife, Paula Yates, but most of us know all too well that the men have a say, too, no matter how insistent/overbearing their partners may be.

Peaches, 23, and musician-fiance Thomas Cohen welcomed their first child just last week. His full name is Astala Dylan Willow Cohen-Geldof  something the couple picked out even before giving birth. As Peaches explains, “We found Astala in a baby name book quite an obscure one… I wanted a Jewish name…and the name is the male version of Esther.”

So there you have it. It’s a name that indeed has personal meaning to the couple, despite what Geldof has to say on the matter. That said, it seems that Sir Bob is over the moon not just to take on the grandfather role but also to have a little boy in a very female-heavy family. He told The Sun, “I’ve swam in estrogen my entire life, and now finally a little chap comes along.”

As we all know, names are a huge part of someone’s identity but at the end of the day it’s just about having a healthy baby. I have one friend who narrowed her list of male baby names down to two one was traditional, the other was pretty out there; she went with the latter solely to piss off her mom, who was mortified by the name. And just last month I ran into an old friend of my mother’s, who has recently become a grandmother. “Congrats!” I told her. “I heard she has a really cool name. It’s Cedar, right?” I asked. I could read the look of horror on her face but, like a good mother/grandma, she simply smiled and said, “Yes, and she’s absolutely adorable.”

Bob Geldof should do the same. But, hey, it seems it’s all in jest anyway as hypocritical as he sounds. Clearly he is thrilled to have a little grandson, which is sweet. Besides, names always grow on people. Even the most unusual ones out there always seem to suit the little person they belong to, don’t you think?
