Okay, I’ll admit it: I was kind of excited to see what Beyonce and Jay-Z would name their little bundle. As you’ve no doubt heard by now, they’ve opted for Blue Ivy. Sure, it sounds a bit like a trendy bathroom paint color, but I like it. It’s sweet. And somewhat tame. But, most of all, it has meaning to the superstar couple, which is always cool when it comes to baby names.
According to various reports, the couple chose “Ivy” because it represents the roman numeral IV for 4. Beyonce fans know that the diva’s latest albums is called 4 – her fourth solo studio album – while both Beyonce and Jay-Z both have birthdays on the 4th (Bey’s is in September, Jay-Z’s in December). The power couple also got married on April 4, and they reportedly have matching “IV” tattoos on their wedding fingers. So a significant number indeed, and I like how they got creative with it.

Meanwhile, Jay-Z has three albums under the hugely successful Blueprint banner (The Blueprint in 2001; The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse in 2002: and The Blueprint 3 in 2009), which helps explain where the name “Blue” comes from.
I like that it’s somewhat unexpected – it’s a pretty original name, especially for a girl – and it’ll be interesting to see if any other little Blues pop up this year (something tells me yes). Some people find the name rather ridiculous but, hey, to each his own. I think it’s sweet. And, at the end of the day, all that really matters is that a healthy baby came into this world – celebrity or not.

I liked the name much, much better when I thought it was Ivy Blue instead. Blue Ivy sounds like the parents are botanists instead of musicians.
