Forget Marissa Mayer For A Sec I Want Marion Cotillard’s Job!

marion cotillardAs you’ve no doubt heard by now, Marissa Mayer is leaving her job as VP of Google and heading over to Yahoo. It’s big news made even bigger by the fact that that Mayer is expecting her first child this fall, making her the first ever pregnant CEO of a Fortune 500 company. (Crazy, I know.) As the world weighs in some think it’s a major coup for women everywhere, others see Mayer’s non-existent maternity leave as setting a dangerous precedent for working moms I was intrigued by a different public figure making headlines: Marion Cotillard.

That’s because the French actress, who plays Batman’s love interest in The Dark Knight Rises, revealed in this month’s Vogue that director Christopher Nolan rearranged the entire production schedule to accommodate her pregnancy. (Cotillard, 36, gave birth to a boy, Marcel, in May 2011 with actor-director Guillaume Canet.)

Apparently Nolan was keen on “figuring it out” because he was already a fan of Cotillard’s after working with her on 2010’s Inception. When he discovered she was pregs, Nolan pushed the shooting of her Dark Knight scenes back a month, which may not sound like such a big but actually is when you’re dealing with a mammoth production.

The same can’t be said for new mom Hilary Duff, for example, who announced her pregnancy last August and was promptly dropped from her role as Bonnie Parker in The Story Of Bonnie and Clyde remake. ”Hilary won’t be available until next June. If we could wait we would,” one of the film’s producers said at the time. Beyonce, on the other hand, was set to start filming for Clint Eastwood‘s remake of a A Star Is Born earlier but similar to Cotillard, filming was pushed back to accommodate the performer.

According to Vogue, Nolan was impressed with Cotillard’s performance so soon after her pregnancy. “She gave birth and was back on set almost immediately. She’s Superwoman,” he said. I guess that, too, could be construed as setting a dangerous precedent, but such is the catch-22 of “having it all” (whatever that means).

Like us, Cotillard struggles to find that elusive work-life balance as a mom, though she has a great little way of explaining it:  “I’ve never been more exhausted. But I’ve never had more energy,” she told Vogue. “This is the paradox of being happy. That’s where it comes from.”

Love it.
