Beyonce’s Weight Loss Plan Should Make Moms Feel Better, Not Worse

beyoncebabyweightSix weeks after giving birth to baby Blue Ivy, Beyonce is focused on dropping her 40 lbs of baby weight. And let’s just say she’s not exactly lazing around eating bonbons. In fact, Beyonce is working her ass off (literally!) with intense, four-hour-a-day workouts and an equally rigid diet.

Hollywoodlife.com reports that Bey is waking up at an ungodly 5 a.m. to get in her first workout of the day. (When you have a newborn, that’s no small feat.) And apparently her trainer Marco Borges has moved into the family home to lead her daily workouts, which includes a two-hour workout first thing in the morning and then again at 5 p.m. “They do a mix of cardio, Pilates, plyometrics, yoga and, of course, dance,” a source told Hollywoodlife.com.

On the food front, Beyonce is eating six small, high-protein meals a day, such as egg-white omelets and protein shakes. And, according to the source, Beyonce is already seeing progress: She has so far lost 14 lbs and hopes to reach 128 by early March. (She weighed 170 at the height of her pregnancy.)

I’m always wary of anonymous insiders/sources sharing this type of info but what I do like about this story assuming even a fraction of it is true is that is shows the real way in which most celebs out there get into shape post-baby. I am so tired of celebrities claiming they got their bodies back by going on leisurely walks and doing the odd yoga class. Why? Because that’s bullshit!

That said, I do believe that some women really do shed their baby weight naturally and easily. For me, personally, breastfeeding 17 times a day and going on intense walks in an attempt to get my baby to sleep really did the trick; I was actually thinner three months post-baby than I am now, three years post-baby. (I think that not sitting at a desk all day helped, too.) So, trust me, I’m not bashing any woman celeb or not who easily whips her body right back into shape post-baby. What I am judging are those who lie about it, which seems to be the norm these days.

Dropping 40 lbs of baby weight is an arduous task. For most women, it takes a full year, if not longer. But when you have all the time and money in the world to train for four hours a day, it’s very possible even realistic to accomplish this goal in a mere eight weeks. My hope is that women will look at Beyonce and see what it entails. It beats the alternative, which is to just assume that we should all look like Miranda Kerr post-baby. Or Anna Freemantle, a lesser-known model who walked the runway just nine days after giving birth.

It’s reassuring to know that unless you’re blessed with ridiculously good genes, it takes hard work to get back into shape. Is the thought overwhelming? Sure. But at least Beyonce’s regimen paints an accurate picture of what’s involved. Sure, we can criticize her for focusing so much on her weight. Or we can thank her for telling it like it is.
