After A Long Battle, Bill & Giuliana Rancic Welcome A Baby Boy, Edward Duke

Bill and Giuliana RancicIt has been a long road to parenthood for Bill and Giuliana Rancic. After first discussing their struggles to get pregnant on their reality show, the couple suffered a miscarriage and fought through breast cancer. But finally, Bill and Giuliana have welcomed their son into the world. Via surrogate, the couple had Edward Duke Rancic last night in Denver. The little one was 7lbs 4ozs and immediately went into his mama’s arms.

For me, it’s hard not to feel a little extra excited for this couple, who has dealt with their infertility so publicly. Their reality show, Giuliana & Bill, addressed their attempts at IVF. It was the first place they announced their pregnancy to a world that was already excited for the E! News anchor and Apprentice winner.

I can actually still remember seeing the interviews with the couple after their miscarriage. It was heart-wrenching. At the time, my husband and I were just beginning our pregnancy journey. I remember watching that and thinking that I couldn’t possibly bear to go through a similar experience. Then a year later, I got my turn. And I had so much more respect for this couple, having to face that tragedy with so many people watching. Even when writing about losing my child, I get to hide behind my computer. (It’s good for all of you because I’m an ugly crier.)

That bravery was inspiring. It makes this birth all the more magical, knowing what a difficult journey it presented for this couple. I hope that they really get to take the time and the privacy they need with their little bundle of joy.

Of course, even this pregnancy has not been without conflict. Before the London Olympics, news started swirling that Giuliana might be in Great Britain to cover the Games. Concerned people who don’t know her couldn’t believe that she would travel so closely to her child’s due date, possibly missing the birth to see Michael Phelps break another record. Obviously, there was nothing to worry about and tabloids made a big deal out of a non-issue. Cue shock.

One thing is for sure, as Koa Beck noted back in April, Giuliana and Bill’s choice to be so open with the public about their use of a surrogate definitely puts a dent in the stigma associated with the choice. Koa called the announcement a “contemporary happy ending.” I think that the Rancic’s would agree.

Bill told People, “Our journey has a happy ending. We didn’t give up, we didn’t quit and we’re going to have a good ending to this.”
